ATTITUDE is all that matters!!!!!!!

What makes a person live beyond his fears?
What makes a person feel determined?
What is it that encourages him to perform with a new zeal even after a terrible failure?
What makes him value tolerance and value?

I have a single word as an answer for all the above questions - ATTITUDE!!!

What do they say about Attitude?

Michael Jordan says - "My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength".

Albert Einstein says - "Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character".

Zig Ziglar says - "Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude".

It's your attitude which will determine your altitude

And for a standard definition, Merriam Webster Dictionary says - "a mental position with regard to a fact or state; a feeling or emotion toward a fact or state"

We've seen many successful businessmen who would say even now, that their first attempt was a failure and they were severely criticized for that failure. Hadn't they come out of it, they wouldn't have been successful by now. How did they do it? Was it the financial support? Was it the support from family & friends? Was it the support from a mentor? Nope. Again, it is an one word answer 'Attitude'.

Few say attitude cannot be changed but I just don't believe in it. Take my example, now I am not like as I was 3 years go. 3 years ago, I was a fresh grad out of college with loads of ambitions and confidence. I never had a clear vision. All I wanted was to get into a job which I feel is good and get settled with that. I joined a Telecom company and after one year, I wanted to do my post Graduation. I would say that was one of the biggest mistakes ever I've committed in my life. I was cheated because I was not very clear where I was getting into. I don't want to blame anyone here, because I was the only person responsible for it.

Not just the education, I faced failure in everything I did. I've heard of the proverb 'Everything he touched turned into gold' but it was completely reverse in my case. Everything I touched turned into a mess. I was cheated by the bank, robbed by cyber thieves, criticized by friends and left away with no support other than my family. Meanwhile my father suffered huge losses in his businesses and I was left away with no option other than to sit back and cry.  One fine day, when I was completely fed up with everything, I sat back and started thinking. Who is responsible for this? Society? Friends? Country? Parents? Education system? No. I was responsible for everything which happened around me. I would've done things differently had I known the end result already. That's when I decided to always start with an end in mind.

I don't want to sound so negative but  I think of my death all the time. What would I want my friends, society, family or country to say about me when I die? I listed down all the things and started planning. Even now, when I plan for any activity or a project, I start with an end in mind. For most, the plan starts with 'A' but mine starts with 'Z'. I visualize the end result and start working backwards towards the start, to figure out where I am standing right now. I also have to agree that this is not a method I introduced. I read several biographies, auto-biographies, interviews, success stories and case studies. I noticed, many thought leaders trying to say that they visualize everything in mind before they start. When I have the guts to say I was a failure, I also have the guts to say I was inspired by many, who were in the similar situation.

When I started visualizing the end in mind, I noticed the results were favorable for me and the people involved in it. I was appreciated several times for this approach and criticized by few as well. However, as a Marketing Professional, I follow the universal rule of sticking to the method which works the best (A/B Testing Method). A method with favorable results always interest anyone than the one which doesn't. End of the day, I care about the people associated with me. So, I don't want anyone to suffer because of my decision to experiment. I'm very clear about that. I will go with an experiment, only when the situation demands it and only when I can predict the results to a certain extent.

As Kurt Vonnegut rightly said, “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”

I'm not claiming that I'm very successful because of the approach I've taken but I can proudly say that I am now, where I wanted to be, a year back. I've been building every brick of my life very carefully and I know where I want to be 5 years, 10 years, 20 years down the line. And without any seconds thoughts, I will be there. Mark my words on your calendar right now :-).

A year back, when I was just a student, I wanted to design a product or a solution on my own. Now, after a year, I've designed (with the help of some good people) a solution, which nobody has done in this world. A solution, which could help save a lot of time for a lot of businesses. A solution, which could give birth to a new set of businesses. A solution, which could give jobs to hundreds of thousands of people across the world. A solution, which could change the way, how the business operates now. Here I am, exactly where I wanted to be a year back.

Other than developing a solution, I wanted to be a blogger who could educate few people with the little knowledge that he's got. I wanted to be a blogger, whose blog will be read by a minimum of 100 people in a day. And here I am with a blog, read by close to 150 people in a day across the world. Give a pat on your shoulders, my friend!!! You are one among those people, I visualized will be reading my blog a year after.

Of course there are few other things I wanted to achieve, which I feel strongly can be achieved in days to come. However what kicked me to get up from that failure? What made to make a strong statement? It was my ATTITUDE.

I know where I want to be from here, a year after. I want my invention to receive the global attention and I foresee many businesses making use of it. You know what? I started working on it already. It's growing at a brisk pace and I will definitely be there where I want to be.

I am just a small fish in a big ocean but I make it clear, that I will write about it, only if I've experienced or followed it before. I love people who carry their attitude, irrespective of the situation they're in.

Mike Jeffries - CEO - Abercrombie & Fitch
Have you heard of the company A&F (Abercrombie & Fitch) and its CEO Mr. Mike Jeffries? Mike got into a controversy off-late for his attitude towards XL-Sized people. Mike in an interview said, "Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong [in our clothes], and they can't belong." Literally, what he meant was, his company's product does not suit XL-sized people and they better stay out it. For this statement, he was also called as a 'nerd' by Deutsch, chairman of advertising agency Deutsch Inc. What's wrong with Mike's Statement? He wanted to stay relevant to his target customers. He just cannot do justice to everyone. I belong to the XL-sized category but I am not offended with his statement.

I love people and company who wants to stay relevant to their target customers and make them feel special all the time. Being a XL-sized guy is my problem and it's not the company's problem who feel that you are not their target customer. Though the A&F PR Team apologized after this controversy, Mike never apologized. There is no need to apologize when he has not done anything wrong. Has Apple not done this before? They wanted to serve only the people who belong to luxury segment and that's why they priced all their products so high, though it's not worth it. The same is the case with all the most expensive brands in the world. The only thing is they've not made a statement that their product or services is not for a particular segment of people. There's nothing wrong with that. Your customers have to feel special about your brand. If not, you are just another guy.

I'm a niche marketer. I don't reach out to masses. I pick up a segment, serve them and make them feel special. That's what I can and will do. I don't care about the rest of the people who doesn't fall under my target segment, when it comes to my business or my client's business. And I don't get offended too, when I do not fall under a target segment of some other businesses.

A&F sales suffered because of the controversy. Did the board fire Mike?  No. He is one of the highest paid CEOs even now and any company who really care about their niche target customers, will definitely go for a CEO like Mike Jeffries.

Be it a business. Be it a person. I would always prefer one should carry their attitude. Attitude is the one which matters the most. Anything can be learnt soon by working hard, other than the attitude. One has to change from the inner-self (Not just for the society or some one else), if they've to work on their attitude. It's my attitude which keeps me running, keeps me awake during nights, scares me about the future, makes me care for my target customer, builds new products & solutions which could benefit the world, makes me learn and do everything I'm doing right now which includes writing this blog.  I always try to focus on my circle of influence (where I will be able to do something) rather than focusing on my circle of concern. I did & will do the same because I strongly feel it's working out for me and the people associated with me . What about u?

The controversy of Mike Jeffries was not unintentional. I guess Mike wanted to get into a controversy because of the dip in sales of Abercrombie to spice it up

As a contrary to all the above comments I like to say that attitude is not everything. I agree it still makes a difference but not everything. No offence. I am a kind of person who still believes on accompanying skills with attitude to make the complete difference. What say?
